Description

This instrument was collected in the field by Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton, during his world trip between 1889 and 1891. It is a side-blown flute made of bamboo with several rings of lacquered silk thread tightly wound around the tube, which function as ferrules and keep the bamboo from splitting. Distributed along the tube are an embouchure-hole, a membrane hole (mirliton bamboo membrane missing), six finger-holes, and four vent holes at the distal end (two of these also possibly for hanging a decorative string or tassel). Both end caps are missing.
