Description

This round wooden pitch pipe is made of unstained mahogany and consists in a pipe and a pitcher. This type of wooden pitch pipe was particularly used in the 18th and 19th century churches which had not organ, to give the firts note for a hymn. This is an example of early pitch pipes, which used to be marked with the notes from either a chromatic or diatonic scale; when the instrument was blown, the note indicated would have been produced. This particular pith pipe was used at Drigg Church in Cumberland.
