Description

"Cog wheel; spare part for a car. Used to keep the tempo and to add tone colour. Previously made by blacksmiths" (Valentine Kihuha; Shadrack Yongo, 21 November 2018) Made in the class Organology - Traditional musical Instruments, Music Department, Kenyatta University, Ruiru, Nairobi Style: Central Kenya "The player holds the instrument in the left hand and a beater, a steel rod, in the right hand. The sound is produced by hitting up and down the inside of the ring, which is usually brought to rest on a hard surface, such as a box, on the last beat of each bar. It is nowadays used to accompany the accordion especially the mwomboko dance" (Senoga, 2000, 174)
