Description

Plucked stringed instrument with a pear-shaped, flat-back soundbox. Back and ribs of bookmatched burled maple. Spruce top with rose. Neck and pegbox of flamed maple, terminating in square-shaped finial. Ebony fretwood with twelve brass frets, and six drilled holes in the spaces between the nut and the 7th fret that would have had a capotasto (i.e. a "moving-bridge" normally made of ivory or ebony, fixed with a wing-nut and a bolt). Ten wooden friction pegs for two single bass strings and remainder four double-course strings (wound- and plain-metal), pinned at the bottom of the body with ivory pins. Arched ebony bridge. Ivory nut and bottom saddle. Rounded knob with mother-of-pearl inlay on bottom. This instrument is part of the Albert C. Spencer collection.
