Description

"Shaken vessel rattle. Used in the Kayamba dance and the Sengenya dance; the players play several kayamba's together. Also used in church (catholic and protestant). Traditionally made by the Giriama; by now used by many communities; generally used all over Kenya. Original manufacture: sisal strings instead of nylon. NB: Sengenya dance: dance of the coastal people among the Mijikenda community; mixed dance. Not sure where names come from ; before we did not have names for the dances, we gave names because Europeans asked how the dances were named. Sengenya = swahili name for gossiping."
