Description
This instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, sides, scroll, and neck of sycamore; peg of boxwood; fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector and endbutton of ebony. Single string of gut. Soundboard shows evidence of tree damage. Ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. Golden Varnish. Flame sound-holes. Composite shape - violin shape in the top half with guitar shape below the upper points. Two piece back, medium figure which rises from the edges to the centre. The nut, fingerboard and bridge are all curved even though there is only one string. Fingerboard has horizontal notches/scratches at intervals down its length – presumably added by a player for ease of finding notes. The tailpiece is a violin tailpiece, converted by drilling a central hole and not using any of the standard holes. Measurements: Neck is unfigured, 506mm long; fingerboard 635mm long, 17.3mm wide at nut, 31.2mm wide at bottom. No inscriptions. Current ownership: Lent by H. Allen.
