Description

The kooauau (koauau) is a traditional Maori end-blown flute that is carved from a single piece of native wood. It has three raised fingerholes bushed with paua shell (two bushes missing), and there is a carved hole on the opposite end of the tube (now plugged) for a strap. When not played, these beautifully carved flutes were often used as ornaments around the neck.
